19/12/2009 (No Sam this Month, he went snow boarding in France....Pussy! LOL) Racers Guild 19th Dec 2009.....The last racers guild of the year and the last for it's foundering father Aaron Neumann, if you are not aware of the guild then take a look at the Racers Guild about page, it explains why Aaron decided to start up the Guild, you see Aaron is heading back to the United States (where he is Originally from) I'm sure he will be sadly missed around the trails and on 'Timed Run' day each month at Stile Cop BUT I'm also sure that he will be Equally sad to be leaving behind such a brilliant and exciting scene and group of great guys that ride there! OK onto the days 'timed run' news....... 1st off Jumble AKA John Lee has been doing a little bit about the DH trails recently to add a some fun into riding again and a few weeks ago decided to host a Mini Mega Avalanche, basically a race with a Le Mans style start where all riders would run to their bikes and race down a predecided course (in this case the red then CDL then fier road push up finishing on the black tabletop) BUT the 'Mini' in Mega Avalanche rela to the size of the bikes and not the distance of the run! thats right they raced down the hill in full race kit on kids bikes! LOL (I'll post all links at the end) OK back to the story, so Jumble has been organising more fun stuff and posted up an idea to ride fancy dress at Saturdays Guild meeting in Dec....and so it went! I was decorating all week previous and even though off work I just ddn't have time to get anything so on the Thursday I was phoning around every fancy dress store to see if I could 'Buy' an outfit as I knew it would probably end up ruined! I did find one very Local BUT they did not have a shop or back counter and only did internet orders, when asked if i could buy online and pick up locally they said.......No, I asked why? and the women said.......the manager doesn't like it! ohhhh that's not very good business is it? (I asked)......... Errrrrrr we're not insured (she said) Muppets! no wonder they sell fancy dress! So at this point I had no fancy dress, then my brother in-law came to the rescue with a Barak Obama rubber mask (cheers Mike) I got myself a black tie from M&S for £5 and put on some black trousers and white shirt! sweet.... outfit sorted! On the Day there was 2 santa's (1= Aaron Neumann, 1= Andy hughes) 1 Fairy complete with bright coloured Tutu (Luke Cryer) Superman (Elliot Machin) So I had one Practice Run down the trail (Not in Fancy dress) and boy was it bad........ Black Ice........ Frozen Solid muddy tyre grooves, permafrost.........call it what you will! it was so slippery riders were falling off everywhere, the only section not slippery was in the lower wooded section of the trail where the wind couldn't do it's dirty and freeze everything Solid! which made the fact that I still hadn't bothered to take the Maxxis Wet Screams worth putting on! (Not really cause this was about 10% of the trail LOL) it was so slippery that I only did the one Practice run and thought I'd save myself for the Timed Runs instead incase I had an off! First Run went OK, I didn't really push it on any section, partly cause I had gone there with not being competative in mind due to the Fancy dress and partly because I couldn't really see what I was doing through the eye holes of the Mask! I made it down in one piece with a time of 1 minute 14.4 sec's! not bad I suppose! Everybody was just cheering me on as I went passed shouting....Go on Obama etc! very funny and one of the best days ever! Then I did an ghour of Marshalling to help out and give the regular Marshalls a break in the freezing conditions! On my second run I decided to go a little faster cause I knew I could go faster and still stay safe on the Ice, but due to the extra speed I carried through the off camber Descent and rock garden and the fact that my eye lashes were flicking on the inside of the mask, my eyes started to water really badly just as I was entering the Gnarliest section of roots and I was riding partially blind from the tears.....ha, I fell off and landed on my leg right on a tree stump! with all the shouting of encouragement and a burst of adrenaline I was back on the bike and shot off down the trail to the finish line with a time of 1 minute 15.6 sec's.......... not bad since I fell off, and I still had a brilliant day! Fastest time of the day was 56.6 sec's by Adam Halling, followed closely by Lee Gratton with 57.6 and Andy Hughes at 57.8........ So as you can see I was way off the pace this month! I think everybody there though just had a brilliant days Timed runs and it wrapped up the year nicely! Pictures of the day by Me, Stu, DrifterJon, Tim, KitMan Video's by TeamBoon's Ian, and Lance Just one Final thing to say........ Have a Happy New Year, see ya in 2010! Paul.
09/12/2009 Racers Guild 29 Nov 09, I have to say was one of the best and worse 'Timed Runs' so far this Year! the weather wasn't looking very promising but come the day the rain held off and it turned out to be a cracking day! great I thought.... I hadn't bothered to replace the Wet Screams with dry tyres! After having a few tentative runs down the proposed track (s) the idleness of not changing tyres turned out to be a good descision as a fare portion of the course was quite muddy in places! Although if I had of needed a set of tyres at would not have been lost because Descent-Gear were there with the Descent-Gear Event Van selling loads of goodies at super cheap prices (Maxxis DH tyres at £50 a pair) We (Me and Sam) managed to get three practice runs in plus a whole load of watching the others riders come down and could see what lines they were choosing (good and bad) by which time we had forgotten all about signing on and getting a start time sticker....DOH!!!!! we frantically pushed up to the start and signed on, but there was only under 16's race numbers left! I may be youthful in my looks (I keep telling myself, lol) but there was no way we were gonna pass for U16 and were quickly rumbled! Come our race runs and the course was really beginning to rut up and loads of deep rutted lines were being created. The Course chosen was brilliant (I thought) The start was the Black Run that then joined the Red Run (thats Red Run NOT Red Rum) at the Big Berm, travelled about 30 foot down the Red then quickly veered off down the beginning of Snakes and Ladders.... which you could either take the ladder drop or go past slightly and miss it out and avoid the slippery wood of the ladder, we both chose the non ladder faster line to the left of the ladder! from here it followed down to the brilliant full speed Catch Berm and then for the less confident riders it was a really hard pedal in the wrong gear or a get off and push affair, because the trail then went uphill 20-30 foot! if you were super confident in the catch berm you were carrying so much speed that you were braking at the top of the hill for a tight switch back around a tree with gnarly roots after it! from here it snaked down a steep slippery grooved and tight double switch back then rejoined the Red Run and crossed over the Fire road push up path to finish on the bottom of the Dark Side (end of Chris Derry Line, CDL) So I went first on My Timed Run, everything went swimmingly, I got every corner pinned, soaked up every bump and drop to carry as much speed in to every section, pedalled my legs off in every section that wasn't a drop or jump.... Basically my run went perfect! I got to the Finish line and the Timer Guy was talking on the walkie talkie and holding the time sheet but wasn't paying attention to the stop watch for my time........Nooooooooo! after an age of him on the walkie talkie I asked for my time and he fumbled for the stop watch...errr 1 minute 31 secs............ohhhhhh I thought........ I just put down one of the best runs I have ever had and possibly my best finishing position this year and I'll never know what my real finishing time was??????? GUTTED! Sams Run went much better he felt like he had done pretty good when I asked him after the run, he pinned every corner and just basically rode his legs off.... Obviously he wasn't satisfied with his run.......we rarely are! but pretty damn good for his second Guild meeting ever! He managed a 1 minute 27.3 secs. Sams 2nd run he said he felt like he had made a few silly mistakes from trying a little too hard But felt quicker overall on the whole run and was expecting a quicker time than the first but when he got to the bottom of the course the time was 1 minute 33.5 seconds! Damn Ghetto timing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL.....Oh well I guess you can't complain about the timing when you only pay £2 to enter and had a great days riding! (thanks to all the organisers of the day) On my Second and last run I again put everything into it and felt like I was really 'On-It' that was until I got to the second to last corner and a new line was being carved out (I had ridden the same line earlier but that was 1 1/2 hours earlier) there was loads of off camber exposed roots on the corner now and I got a bit of an almost 'off and out of control' moment going on! then I regained contol and got around the corner with the finish line in sight I was pedalling to the last corner, about 25 feet from the finish line when my front tyre slid out from under me.......noooooooooooo I cried out!!!! I went down............. Sam at the finish line, everybody else at the finish line (Richie, Aaron etc) all shouting get up, get up! I got back on and rode to the finish line......... 1 minute 28.3 secs.........ahhhhhhhhhhhh! Oh well apart from my fall and the mis-timing incident it was another brilliant days 'Timed Runs' courtesy of the brilliant set of guys at the Guild! Me and Sam were Buzzing all the way home in the car, I was making excuses about my first run and how it wasn't my fault (sorry Sam I know you're sick of hearing this still LOL) and Sam took the oportunity to make sure he rubbed in the fact that he beat me on the day! And beat me he did, I finished 50th out of 117 and Sam finished 45th out of 117. Pictures from the day here >Gallery, video from boon productions here >Video Can't wait for the next meet 19th Dec here we come! (or should I say here I come, Sam's off boarding in France... jammy sod!)

24/10/2009 Octobers Racers Guild meeting...... One Word........ AWESOME!!!! I have to say, every month I am looking forward to the next Racers Guild Meeting to take part in the awesome 'Timed runs' that a few of the guys organise, and every month I spend the next several nights after the meet dreaming or just lying awake thinking about which section I could have done better or faster and which trail next months 'Timed Run' will be on! This month saw this years full run on Wonderland, it was partially ran earlier on in the year with the top section being on Balboa but this was completely ran on Wonderland in it's entirety (is that how I spell it? who cares!) also on this months trail they added in a 30-40 metre sprint to the finish line through some pretty boggy mud which really sapped all the riders energy.... a pain in the Butt? no not at all, I loved it and kinda thought of the bit of pedalling as a finish that you would normally see at the end of a World Cup Race ( i.e a bit of a pedal to keep the riders in check! ha ha) Also Descent-Gear were there with their Van selling off lots of cheaper Goodies to the riders, Si Paton also Raced in the Guild and finished in 5th position overall! the winner on the day though was Andy Huhges! He's Super fast, taking the lead with 58.5 seconds! This was also Sam's first ever DH race, Sorry 'Timed Run' when he found out it was gonna be on Wonderland he was really excited about having a go at a Timed Run session, but then he seemed to be a little less excited once he'd had time to sleep on it and think about falling off and hurting himself, come the morning of the 24th I was expecting a text to say that he wasn't coming! BUT 10:30am and Sam turned up!! Quite nervous but up for it non the less.... MINT! we got there did 3 practice runs, Signed on, payed our £2 each Donation got our start time stickers then waited for our start time to come up, Sam went first so I could get an action shot of him coming down the trail on his race run! he wasn't overall pleased with his run but he didn't fall off, and he was grinning like a cheshire Cat! Time = 1 minute 14.2 seconds pretty bloody brilliant for his first run ever at a Guild meeting! on his second run he got a bit too excited and tried too hard to beat his first run and buggered up the first loose off camber section, causing him to loose valuable seconds (he was also not properly counted in at the start which effected his focus) he ended up 3 seconds slower than his first run and disappointed with himself, overall he finished in 37th place out of a possible 58 places in the senior catagory (16-39 y/o) and 48th out of 83 riders in total. With the best average time of 1 minute 14.9 seconds he was also up on the best average time of the day........ Dude Well done, I was so stoked that he came and gave it a go and I know he was to cause he hasn't shut about it all week at work since! LOL OK now it's my turn to be under the spot light! I was hoping for a good finish at the end of the races but with only two Timed runs each (me and Sam that is) I knew I had it all to do! last time I had raced I didn't turn up early enough to practice and my first run was my practice! so this time I was determined to get there early enough to at least do one run down before my timed Run, Practice went well except for my first run I was gonna try a new line near to the last corner, there is a rough rooted and rock garden section which then bends tight around an old tree stump on the left down and right around a tyre worn berm then tight left again over a mound of earth, not the quickest of lines and very technical to get correct! BUT there was talk of cutting the corner and going between a tree on the left and the stump I mentioned above, I knew I didn't have much chance of threading my bike at speed through the gap between the two and if I got it wrong could end up a mess, so when I approached the tree stump I could see that it could just about be jumped/bunny hopped, so I did..... but the huge roots after it saw me washing out my front wheel and landing on my backside! DOH! there goes that idea, so I stuck to the line everybody else was taking as it was the safe option! (I'm gonna practice that line though I think when I have more time!) 5.4.3.2.1 Go! off I pedalled, get to the first really really loose corner, off camber, tree stump on the outside edge....ahhhhhhh just about keeping it together, very tight left hander with a 1-2 foot drop-off onto even looser gravel surface then it a right hander with roots across the best line so it's down along the well worn trail and loosing all speed again to go back up around the tree, then down, a few more turns on loose surface and then it's into my favourite section, fast and loose and only partially in control.... managed to keep it all together and came out smelling of roses! through the very tight twisted rooty section... 2 jumps more roots and rocks, into the last technical section mentioned above (the one where I landed on my backside) and finally into the corner everyone was dreading cause it was so loose and slippery..... Railed that one (thank you Maxxis Wet Screams, you are the daddy of DH mud/ dirt/ wet tyres) just a sprint to the finish remained .................... 1 minute 7.5 seconds, phewww Not bad I thought! try better on my next run! Next run came, this time I selected an easier gear to get a good sprint off from the start and pedalled like mad, held a much better line around the first horrible corner was faster and smoother off the drop, came to the rooted section across the trail, jumped the lot with a bunny hop to keep loads more speed into the next corner instead of going into the speed sapping dip like most of the riders were doing, the next section was pretty much as the 1st or at least it felt like it was, I thought to my self I'm on for a 2-3 seconds better time here judging by the time I had made up in the top section, sprinted to the finish..............1 minute 7.5 seconds, Ahhhhhhhhhhh how the hell??? I must have lost it in the mid section somewhere? nightmare oh well next time eh? My finishing position 16th out of 58 senior riders, and 19th out of a total 83 riders, I suppose I am pretty chuffed really, that is my best result yet, I am getting closer to the 1st place time, only 9 seconds behind after this race, then again I would have been further back if ALL the fastest riders had raced (but they didn't so I still did good LOL) with the likes of Ben Worrall out with a knee operation and Aaron Tolley having a damaged neck, Greg Hampton at Uni and Elliot Machin's Bike in for repair, really helped me finish in a higher place on the day! Aaron and Ben hope you both get well soon ready for next year!!! Full results here RG Results (each month this link changes to the current months results, just scroll to the bottom of the results page to choose the correct month/ year) Next meet is on the 29th Nov, I'm in London on the 27/28th and really hoping nothing stops me from getting back to attend the Nov Guild meeting! Can't wait! If you have never been to watch the Guild make a note your Diary and get yourself along to watch, its grass roots racing at it's best. fun, fun, fun!!! Practice is anytime before 1pm, which is the start time for the 'Timed Runs' Check out a few choice photo's from the day in my Gallery link here Stile Cop RG 24/10/09 or log onto my Pinkbike gallery and view all 344 (I think?) photo's that me and sam captured from the day here SXbegins/Pinkbike Unfortunately I didn't manage to make it onto either Video this month BUT they are still an awesome watch, so here is the links, Boon Productions Video By Ian and Jumbles Video Also I almost forgot to mention!! (not really cause I am typing this aren't I?) The grand opening of the New Trail called.......... Fantastico Pumptastic Megatrail! which was built by Richie and Stinky Harry went down after the Timed Runs were over, I got a few awesome shots of the riders over the last big gap jump styling it up! pictures here SXbegins/pinkbike/mega and Jumbles Video <here, Boon Productions video <here It is a jumpy pumpy bermy load of high flying fun and is planned to have work started on it again sometime in January (if Richie/ harry can be arsed!) to add a lot more features, including a 'possible' wall ride BUT don't quote me on that one! I may have dreamt that one hoping for a wall ride! he he All I have left to say is Cheers for reading! more next time!
15/10/2009 52 weeks Think of yourself as a hardcore biker? Sure? well if you ain't doing the MegaAvalanche in 2010 then think again! Cause for one guy 'John Lee' AKA jumble thats exactly what he's doing next year! Starting about 11 weeks ago jumble started his training to get fit and train real hard to compete in next years Mega, he already has around 9 sponsors including Haro Bikes, Leatt Neck Braces and Action Camera's Supporting his efforts! why is he doing this? Cause he's nuts! just kidding, he's hoping to Raise a couple of grand for charities while having a blast at the same time and getting fit to boot! follow john Via his blog here Jumble or you can now log onto his website here http://projectfiftytwoweeks.weebly.com/ he also has a video Blog on his Pinkbike profile so check it out, TOP BLOKE!! Be inspired....be very inspired! (Me? I'm a pussy so I won't be doing it... hardcore rider? not a chance!) I only ride the easy lines LOL 13/10/2009 UPDATED DETAILS ON STOLEN STINKY Tommy has confirmed that the bike also has a Troy Lee Designs shiver saddle, old dt swiss rear rim, white funn bars and azonic red anodzed stem! He has also said that there is a £75 reward for information that leads to the return of his bike! If you know who has stolen the bike but are worried about the thief finding out that you ratted on them, then worry not! any info will be delt with in the strictest of confidence with no comeback to you whatsoever! (except for £75 in your Sky Rocket of course and the knowledge that you helped get someones pride and joy back to them to ride another line, he he) Usually theiving Scum who steal items as expensive as this have no idea what they have actually stolen and try to repaint the frame in a different Colour (usually very poorly) so please keep an eye out for a badly painted Kona stinky in a Non Factory painted colour! 12/10/2009 << STOLEN >> Guys please keep your eyes peeled for a Dark blue 06 Kona Stinky with a distinctive White Troy Lee Designs swallow tail saddle with Gory eyeball etc graphics, the bike also has Black Lockon grips with Red locking collars, other than that I think it is pretty stock! It was stolen from Cheadle in Staffordshire by some thieving Scum on Thursday 8th/Friday 9th Oct, the lads name is Tommy Jeffs and he's pretty gutted as you can imagine! please contact the Police and send me a mail or check out http://dhboytommy.pinkbike.com/ if you have any information or are offered a bike fitting this description or see it on an online Auction site! Cheers! 24/09/2009 Ok the Results are up on the Racers Guild website, I was roughly 10 seconds off the winning time, But more amazingly I made it to 16th place out of the seniors which aint too bad (story of my life eh?) still the best bit was just mixing it up and getting loose down the trail......sweeeeeeeeeeet!!!! results link (each month this link changes to the current months results, just scroll to the bottom of the results page to choose the correct month/ year) 20/09/2009 Ok so I didn't make Team Boons final cut (Prob due to my crappy riding) but I did make it onto Jumbles video as I have just found out on pinkbike......sweeeeeet, I'm at 40 seconds exactly! click for linky to Jumbles Video and click for Team Boon's Video 19/09/2009 So I rode at cannock today, I was expecting it to be held on Wonderland but then when I got there (late, too late to do a practice run) I found it was on Ridge run, branching off to the left down an off-camber section with huge trees on the downside...Ahhhhhh Luckily I managed to not hit any but I just buggered up all my runs, my first run was just a run to actually see what the course rode like, so I kinda took it easy(ish) I screwed up 'every' technical piece on the trail and ended with a 1 min 6 sec's time, my second run was much better with only one real screw up and I still only managed to get a 1 min 6 sec's????? I have no idea? I pretty much thought that was it for the day but when I got to the top there were still start times available so I got in a third run, this time I still screwed up in a couple of places (esp the end through the finish line) and my chain jammed meaning I couldn't pedal in one section but then it cleared itself ? (woohoo) and I ended up with a 1 min 3 secs. So even though I put down some pretty crap times, I managed to better my first runs and had a blast of a days riding with my Buddies. I think I was about 10-12 seconds off the winning time? will find out in a day or two when they are posted up on the RG website so keep em peeled on here or check the Racers Guild website in a day or two! 06/09/2009 Congratulations to Great Britian's Steve Peat on winning the Gold at the 2009 DH World Championships in Australia, after digging deep he took the win by just 0.05 sec from fellow Santa Cruz Team mate Greg Minnar who took Silver, with Aussie Mick Hannah coming in just over half a second later to claim the Bronze! Watch it all here on Freecaster 28/07/2009 All Hopton Rd4 Pictures (see below) are now up in the Gallery section of the site! 26/07/2009 Been to Hopton today to watch the Pearce Cycles Rd 4 DH race, I only stayed about 2 hours because I had a cracking headache from eating Crap all weekend (Curry Fri, Junk and cakes Sat, and hardly drank any water) Anyway I think I only managed to catch the Master, Veterans, Women, Juniors, Seniors, Expert and Elite for the First runs! PICTURES will be up soon so keep an eye out in the gallery and news page! I have added a few pictures to my Pinkbike page if you wanna take a look now! I have built one page already but just haven't uploaded it yet! 21/06/2009 I did my second Racers Guild meet at Cannock on Saturday 20th June, I have to say a BIG thanks to all the Organisers (Aaron, Harry, Alex, Rob at the start gate AND all the Marshalls and First aiders + anybody who I don't know the name of yet who helped out) It was a great day and I can't wait to rip it up again next month! my first run was going really well until I ran wide on a tight corner had to get off and put my bike back onto the run then set off again to try to make up time! I ended up with a time of 1 minute.4 secs.? My second run went better and I managed to make it throught the run all the way and the finish line was in sight but on the last little log jump step down my feet came off the pedals and I ended up on the seat with my feet trailing behind, I rolled over the finish line (just about) I got a time of 1 minute 2 secs. ?! On my last run I was hitting most things right and managed to stay on the gas with just one dab in the rooted section in the woods, I held it together to the finish line and managed a 58 secs. 07! So I was really chuffed with that result especially concidering I didn't manage to get into the faster line over the Gap jump and step down and had to stay on the slower/ slippery line to the left! At the end of the Day I am never gonna win a race and fully know that, what with all the brilliant young tallent out there including Little Ripper (Luke, whipping the Gap jump at 85 seconds on the Video below, he's one rider to look out for now and in the future!!) and then there is me trying to stay with the all the guys on bigger DH rigs on my 6 inch travel single crown FR bike. BUT to be honest I don't care about not winning either, I have been having the most fun ever on my SX Trail and just the crack of riding is enough to keep me happy, I have met some great people on the DH/FR scene who are all really encouraging and just a great bunch of guys, not that I wouldn't meet great people Trail riding, its just that trail riders are having so much fun that they hardly ever want to stop and talk so you just never find out! Anyway enough of the arse kissing, here is the Bloody brilliant Video of the day from Ian at Boon productions, Photo's Here in the Stile Cop/Cannock Gallery I even managed to get on the Video again, but this time a little longer (cheers Ian) I'm at 51 seconds to 58 seconds on goldy bike with red wheels, so keep an eye out for me twisting through the trees section!
****Con't news that I hadn't had time to post till today from Wednesday just gone**** Bathpool Bike park! Finally I met up with one of the guys from Kidsgrove Freeriders at Bathpool! This has been on the cards for months and months but we have never been free to meet up, then I got a call from Si Davies on Tuesday night just as I was leaving work, I had no intention of riding Tuesday as I had planned to ride thursday night at Cannock, ready for the RG meet (mentioned in the above news 21/06) then I just thought..........You know what, if I don't go tonight this is never gonna happen! Anyways, I met up with Si and his buddy Ben and we hit up the trails and structures, brilliant bit of building that, I followed Si into the Wall ride as I wasn't sure how it would ride (plus I was still riding with my Wet Scream Mud Spike tyres fitted and wasn't too happy what speed I would need to make it around without wiping out half way around or casing the landing ramp) We started off by riding Tree Hugger and with a few extra little pedal strokes just to make sure, hit the wall ride with ease, over a little double and into a sweet kicker with a very tight double corner, left then immediately right followed by a super skinny at ground level then onto a raised boarded section with SeeSaw into a left had berm and followed by 'The Beast' which Si hit but I chickened out of! We sessioned this for a while then hit the new line thats being built which 'May' turn into a Dual Slalom course, it starts off hi up then drops into an easy (if you're not on spike tyres) left hander with a sweet stepdown Gap jump then straight into a really fast right hander berm with loads of grip then immediately into the left hander berm that is after the SeeSaw section on the other line (mentioned above!) from here on you can either Chicken out or hit 'The Beast'! Eventually there will be another line to take instead of the beast off to the left, which will step-up to a raised platform (already under construction) then I think Si said they (Si and Liam, plus other Volunteers) will hopefully be adding some Dirt Jumps to the end! at present the Materials are mostly funded by outside sources (Council or something, sorry Si I forgot) but the money is going to dry up and funding from another source will have to be sought! I highly recommend getting in touch with either Si or Liam via this Kidsgrove FreeRiders Facebook link, and get yourself down there and rip it up or just have a play around on the brilliant wooded sections and berms! Full Face helmet and Body armour is STRONGLY advised! See some recent pictures of Me, Si and Ben on this page of my Gallery.
25/05/2009 Did my first timed practice runs at Cannocks Stile Cop DH course yesterday, I managed a best time of 1:01:07. My first run was bad with an almost off the track after the gas line step down then I buggered up the switchback left after the big jump which threw me into a tree which I shouldered and that meant that I lost all speed for the rooted section! I managed a 1:02:09 on that run! On my second run I got a really slow start out of the gate but then nailed it down the course until I hit the same switchback which once again I slid out a little and lost all speed for the pre root jump and roots section, then nailed it in the last twisty wooded section and double jump, it felt much quicker But I was only 0:01:02 of a second quicker than my first run? Must have been the slow start? Out of 83 riders I came 47th (booo) results here Racers Guild Overall, I had a great day and can't wait for the next meeting which hopefully I will get my runs dialed and get a better result :) Click this link for the video of Little Ridgewood I'm on at the start in the queue and again jumping the log at 4:37 exactly (not that I'm stoked to be on there on my first RG meet, Honest!!) ;) Woohoo!!
An awesome picture of me just exiting the corner I screwed up and on the Gas! (Picture courtesy of Drifterjon, many thanks Jon best pictures of the day by far!)

27/03/2009 New helmet arrived today, THE One Composite 'Ink' helmet! it is pretty awesome looking and I can't wait to try it out Sunday morning, also purchased a DMC DH-Trainer so gonna see if i can improve my riding and get a little quicker on the DH's..............Or Kill myself ;) LOL
16/03/2009 Just a quick one here, almost time to get in six quality months of after work riding done! make a note in your calender, March 29th = CLOCKS GO FORWARDS 1 HOUR! Woohoo! don't let it go to waste though cause they go back one hour on the last sunday of October which I believe is the 25th!
14/03/2009 As it happens I have made a little bit of a Booboo! the rather excellent looking Bathpool Bike Park in Kidgrove is NOT actually anything to do with Moorlands Freeride, but is actually run by these guys > Kidsgrove Freeriders Mountain bike club, Ran by Simon Davies, Liam Murpy and Eve Davies, sorry guys for the cock up! I saw a link on Moorlands freeride website and made an assumption, DOH! So for any Bathpool bike park related enquires or if you want to ride on their Awesome ever evolving bike park follow this link on Facebook Kidsgrove Freeriders, membership is essential if you want to ride there otherwise you will not be insured and could end up cocking it up for everyone else if the park closes through some H&S bull$h!t so do the right thing and don't ride if your NOT a member! Hopefully I'm gonna get down their sometime soon and join up to be a member, then hopefully TRY to ride their park! A permanent link to Kidsgrove freeriders can be found on my 'Links' page. Hopefully I'll start a new gallery page with some riding pictures of the Bike Park at Bathpool sometime in the near future! So watch this space! 21/02/1009 Interested in freeride? live in North Staffordshire or South Cheshire? then your dreams may have just come true! I had heard a few weeks before from a friend that somebody had told him there were jumps/trails in Bathpool Park, but didn't really think much more about it, but after going for a walk with my daughter I thought I may as well look for the so called jumps/trails. I found multiple lines that could be used for trail riding with little roots and lips to pop off, then after a lot more searching I found the stuff I was told about..................Wow!!!!!! is all I can say. There are a few guys building over there from a group calling themselves 'Moorlands Freeride! on their website they are asking for help with the Build days so anybody interested look here at this link Moorlands freeride I think it may be best to enquire about becoming a member of Moorlands freeride to avoid peeing them off, or they may just wanna build some great trails that they are proud of and don't mind who ride them as long as riders respect them and look after the trails/ leave no rubbish etc? I am assuming it is a Legitimate Build as there is proper wooden signage around, they have built an awesome set of Skills sections in Bathpool woods, non of it is flowing single track so if you are looking to get out and ride some trails then look elsewhere, this is a 'Ride a line then push back to the top and have a go at it again or try another line! I would say that there is about 6 different lines in total ( I think, didn't really count them), some skinny, some steep, lots muddy and slippery, and a few that need speed to clear! And the early stuff looks like it was built a while back and is more in the woods as opossed to the mini dish/ wooden berm section which is out and exposed (not many pictures of the older stuff, sorry) Anyway until I have ridden/ allowed to ride them I can't bring anymore to this story so I'll let the pictures speak for themselves until I have ridden it.
One of the Original lines I think?
And again looking down the lip
Looking back up it from below
Start of the aptly named Skinnyline
Drop-in, then on to a jump at the bottom followed by mud then another jump
Same jump different angle
Side view
The start of the tricky fallen tree section 'Tree Hugger'
Choose your line, left along the even skinnier branch or stick right for the safer option (like I will)
And the run out from 'Tree Hugger'
From 'Tree Hugger' the trail leads on to this mini dish/ wooden berm
Gap jump out of the mini dish
Gap to transition, excellent!
From the Wall ride the trail carries on to a tricky gap jump which is just visable in the top left of this picture (follow the horizon at the base of the tree line leftwards) then it bends back to a very skinny fallen tree and on to this skinny with SeeSaw section
Then into this newly built berm (still soft at present so needs time to bed in/ settle)
At present the berm leads to nothing, but this looks like the end will be this huge gap jump when it is complete!
06/02/2009 Not been out on the Prophet for a month or more now, I stripped the fork down about three weeks ago, reset the bearing migration, unsiezed the rebound actuator rod, greased the needle roller bearings, drained the oil for the SPV chamber and have been waiting for some 2.5wt oil to come into my Local Dealer. the oil has now come but the weather is a bit too cold for me to want to get out into the Garage to finish off the service and rebuild the fork, plus I have also stripped the rear hub to replace the bearings as they were feeling a little rough and dry when the wheel was spun BUT then I found that the freehub was in need of a little TLC so I stripped that down to and noticed that the loose ball bearings in one side were knackered so I have ordered a new freehub and greased up the old one as an emergency spare for the future! gonna wait until all the parts come into stock and then probably rebuild all at the same time! will try and get some more pictures of the fork as I rebuild it to show how to service the fork yourself and then put them on the Howto page. In the mean time I haven't stopped riding, I have been out on the New SX trail, it is one awesome bike and I am finding myself finding more and more Gnarly trails that I can ride down and then push back up to have another go at! I have now started riding some pretty good trails, only problem is now I feel like I may be overdue a 'Faceplant to tree/ ground' trick so I am thinking of taking it a little easier until I can get a Full Face lid and some body armour incase of such an incident! My new Shimano AM40 shoes are brilliant and my new 661 Race knee/shin combo pads are comfy and feel very safe against pedal strikes so i am really impressed with both purchases. 28/12/2008 This could possibly the Final post of 2008! I fitted the new seat post and also tried the fork with the 3 clicks on the compression damping but its still a little too fast so I have upped it to 5 clicks and this seems good now! the seat post has made a big difference to riding the bike and it is much easier to pedal with full leg extension. I went to Cannock today and rode the Monkey trail again, then I headed off and found the Monkeys uncle (I think thats what its called, monkeys uncle, uncle, the uncle???) anyway it was a very good trail, if a little wet this time of the year! its defo not one for the XC full Sus/ hardtails though, don't get me wrong I am not saying that it can't be ridden on a XC bike its just that unlike the Monkey trail which has small travel friendly drops and a hard packed surface, the Uncle is steepish and is muddy/ rooty and has pretty big jumps and drops better suited to a longer travel bike with slacker geometry! not a very good set of pictures as I forgot to add flash but here is some recent pictures of me on the Uncle? doing the Hip jump Gallery Cannock After riding the two trails I then headed over to Stile Cop to check out the new Table-top jump and the newly finished Snakes and Ladders section, the Table-top is not quite finished yet and still has to be tweaked, and I personally found it a little too steep for the kind of speed being carried out of the step down jump and through the berm! but they may have built it that way as they find it to be perfect? (showing my lack of jumping skill on new obsticles) The new Ladder section looked really scary and I didn't bother to have a try for a while, it is about a 3 1/2 foot drop but there is a flat section of about 4-5 foot that has to be cleared then the landing is on to a steep descent which is very short and goes straight into a tight berm that ends in a jump! There were a few guys who were having a go for the first time so I stopped and watched them for a bit, But I still wasn't convinced so stood and watched for a bit with another bloke who didn't dare try either, while we were contemplating, a young lad came along and asked if we had hit it yet, to which we both replied NO! he walked the lip looked over the edge, fetched his bike then just took the plunge and dropped in, I though come on..... get it together! so I rolled up to the lip on my bike to see if I could spot the landing and I could. I went back up the ramp got myself composed and then rode off and dropped into the steep descent before I had a chance to talk myself out of it! It was actually easier than the bigger step down that leads into the table-top jump. Had a great days riding and can't wait to get another ticket to ride from the wife some time very soon!!
19/12/2008 Well it seems that you can't have anything these days without somebody doing a rip off of your idea! I had an Email from MSN wanting me to use there search engine called Big Snap II, so just to see how quick it was I typed in 27gears.com, sure enough my site came up as number one hit, I then scrolled down the page and found http://www.27gears.it (I have linked it so you can take a looksee) I mean come on, think up your own name for peats sake! they even have the nerve to have Copyright www.27gears.it 2008 at the bottom of the page, as though it was their idea! Oh well the internet is a pretty big place and i couldn't really care less (honestly) rant over. Actually I could care less and just to prove it I think I'll go now and add my own copyright to the botom of my pages, 2007 though! what a difference a year can make eh? :)
13/12/2008 New SX update: Wound a bit of compression onto the fork (3 clicks from off) gonna give that a try to see if it effects things on the speed at which the fork runs through its travel (see next post down) also checked and upped the air pressure in the Rear shock Booster valve as it was supposed to have been set up at the shop but wasn't, gonna give that a try also! Ordered a longer seatpost so I can actually get some leg extension when pedalling as the post fitted was only 300mm long, my guess is that Specialized specs this model with a shorter seat post to try to save some weight on an already heavy bike? Also ordered a pair of Shimano AM40 shoes, can't wait for them to arrive!!
10/12/2008 Hi all I got my new bike yesterday at long last, it is a real beauty as well!
19/11/2008 Still awaiting my new SX trail 1 to come to the UK! I emailed Spesh direct and they sent me a reply stating that they expect the 2009 SX trail 1 to hit the Uk shores on the 5th of Dec with the Sx trail 2 in early January! I imagine the delay comes down to the big push to get as many cheaper end starter bikes such as the Hardrock and other entry level bikes into the country ready for Xmas? I wouldn't have thought there would be as many people ordering a 2K bike for their kids as a present off santa! Oh well as long as I still have a job (credit Crunch and all) I'll just have to wait a little longer and see what happens? I'll keep you posted.
19/10/2008 A really good turn out to Llandegla today eight of us in total (Steve P, Andy Simpson, Andy Bailey, Sam P, Joe J, Mark Mac, Kev Parks and me), it was steves idea to go so I thought it would be a good opportunity to get some pictures and video footage of my favourite trail, I think I spoke too soon though! My backpack weighed an absolute ton which really slowed me down on the climbs (coupled with my unfitness!) so everybody had to wait for me at the top of every climb which I'm sure started to grate with their patients, my video Camera batteries gave up about half way down one of the less smooth red sections near to the beginning so I didn't even get to take any descent jumping footage on the better smoother black run sections! then to cap it all off, Andy said he would take some pictures of us jumping on the last excellent black run descent, so I set the SLR up for him at what I thought was the correct setting for speedy pictures i.e 'Sport setting' which turned out to be the wrong choice! it would have been better on 'Auto' at least then only the Camera is to blame if it doesn't take descent photos! I have had a play about with the camera since I got home and realise now that the lighting was too dark in the woods and so the shutter stayed open a fraction too long to get as much light into the apperture, which is what caused the pictures to be blurry! Other than that I had a fantastic ride, the downs were perfect as usual and my riding skills are improving with every ride! I am taking corners much faster than I was say 6 months ago, which was one of my weaknesses that I wanted to improve on. Can't wait to get my new bike so I can go back to Llandegla (alone, so I'm not holding anybody up) and see what the SX trail makes of the jumps and berms, I'm sure it'll shred. Check out Blurry pictures of Llandegla. 21/09/2008 Ok its done! Ive been and placed a deposit on a 2009 SX Trail I at my local Spesh dealer, I was going to wait till the dealers had a Demo of the bike then try it out BUT after a lot of phone calls, it seams that non of my Local Spesh dealers are getting a Demo in of the SX! One said that they don't have Demo's of Freeride and DH bikes due to people taking them on uplift days and abusing them! (fair point) and the other said that due to the low number of units sold they wouldn't be getting one in either for a Demo! So in the end I got cold feet and just went out and placed a deposit! Now all I have to do is try my best to hang in there till early Nov when it arrives in the shop from the Spesh Warehouse!
10/09/2008 I have been very busy as of late, what with my best mate Matts wedding in New York and working a little too much! But what I have been doing is enjoying spending time up at Stile Cop at Cannock Chase, I have been riding the DownHill course a lot and I am really getting into the jumping/drops side of riding! So much so that I will be Demo'ing the new 2009 Spesh SX trail 1 sometime in Nov/Dec then if all goes well (which I'm sure it will) placing an order to get one!! WooHoo bring on the descents is what I say!
Specialized FSR, SX Trail I................................and Specialized FSR, SX Trail II Don't get me wrong I wont be giving up on trail riding on my prophet, this is my main reason for riding i.e to just get out and ride the trails! But I just want something a little more Burly for the bigger stuff, been looking at a lot of bikes and non of the others really fitted the bill, either too lightweight and long travel (which is too close to what I ride at present) or big travel and big weight which I don't want as I intend to try and ride the ups (ok, so it may be in the granny ring but the ups I will ride) then there are bikes that are almost perfect in the travel and weight but the geometry is just a jack of all trades/ master of non. For example the new Kona Magiclink Coilair, I really wanted a Kona to be my next bike BUT after seeing the Magic link instead of the normal Coiler and Coilair I just don't believe it can do all it says and still rip the descents like the SX trail will (so I'm led to believe) I realise that the geometry changes as you climb and descend but in order to climb really well the bike needs to be light (maybe a little too light??) which again brings me back to the lightweight long travel problem! I want something that is planted when it takes off and lands/ rips the berms! not another trail bike that rides really well. 2009 Orange patriot looks pretty sexy to, but again I wanted something a little more tech than the single pivot of the Patriot and the 2009 SX trails look Uber sexy with their new frame design and kick Ass colours, so much so that I have even purchased a set of ODI Ruffians in the LTD Edition Pearl White to pimp up the Bars when I eventually get the new bike!
12/07/2008 Day Trip to Scotland 5am wake up (raining) get my shit together, have a bit of breakfast then its 5:40am and Sam arrives! Bikes on the roof, gear in the boot and off to tesco to fill up with (expensive) fuel, arrive at Glentress with butterflies in my stomach uncertain as to what to expect? gear up and off we set (still raining). Climbing, climbing and some more climbing then we reached the first piece of action! the Orange graded FreeRide park, quick blast down a set of tabletops and berms to the bottom then as we were pushing back up (you're not allowed to ride!) we noticed a set of wooden drop-ins into about a 30-40 foot run out! Excellent, that looks scary and exciting both at the same time!!! A few minutes watch of a couple of other riders to see that its ridable (One guy on a Kona Stinky is launching the middle drop-in and landing half way down this 30-40 foot run out!) eventually I manage to persuade Sam to have a go so I can get a picture of him, which he does! Then its my turn I have a couple of run ups to the middle drop-in to see if its possible to spot a landing? It is, just about! But by the time your dropping off the end its too late anyway as you're already commited! WooHoo down to the bottom pretend to do the Wall rides but really just boost a jump off the bottom of the run-in ramps! Time to move on to the proper red route trails, so we carry on up the trails untill we get to the first descent! its nothing to fancy and probably one of the first descents built at Glentress but just a little teaser to get you into the swing of things! Then its another climb this time it takes us all the way up to the Excellent 'Spooky Wood' descent, we followed all the trails then untill we had done the Red routes apart from the last few back down to the Cafe/ Car Park, then we went back up and found the Ewok Village which is wooden sections with raised platforms and SeeSaws etc then we descended on the Black runs untill we picked up the Red run back to the Car Park. Brilliant!!! Quick Bite and a rest at the HUB cafe then we headed over to Innerleithen which is only about 2.5 miles down the road. We had no Idea what to expect but were on a high from the riding we had just done (If we had have stopped at the Orange graded Free Ride park at Glentress after riding the rest of the trail I don't think we would have hesitated on any of the drop-ins) However now we were faced with a Car Park full of DownHill riders on some big old rigs and there was us on our tiny little girly trail bikes!! (how embarrassing) Still at least we were riding up to the very top not just getting an uplift a tenth of the way! (hang on whose the stupid one here?) anyway we set off on our climb without really realising how far we actually had to climb! Turns out the climb was around the 6 mile mark and boy did we know it! Apart from a short section of slightly downwards trail which would obviously mean that we would have to regain the height we just lost! and another section which was a steep steep fast descent into a trough then a superb step up jump! it was just non stop climbing on single track or fire road and the single track had the added bonus (or pain in the arse) of rocky step up to negotiate! it felt like we were never going to reach the summit, as just when you thought you could see the top it just turned out to be another false summit, Bummer. Once we did get to the top though we were greeted with some fantastic views over the rest of the surrounding hills, there was a pile of rocks that everybody who had accomplished the ride had obviously decided to add to, and so did we! I put a tiny little one on top and Sam did the same then he decided to add another bigger rock between the two we had just placed and it almost all fell down!! Ok now we are at th highest point or are we? Oh I won't bother to start the Video Camera here incase this isn't that good a descent (I thought!) what a descent it was! and the next one to! DOH!!! wished I had set the Camera rolling now, that was two absolutley brilliant descents ( brand new to! according to the Guy who came past us on an SX Trail, he had moved from Sussex for a better life in Innerleithen! I think he may have just found it!!) Ok its too late to re-start the two descents we had just come down as we had already lost about 150m in height and about 1 mile and just couldn't be bothered to ride back up, especially being short on time. Start the camera rolling and get some footage of the next few descents (bare in mind that its pretty much 6 miles of descent) the next few descents are a little Wales Coed y Brenin stylee rocky twisty and fast n fun! then its onto Plora Graig and Razors Rock, a little short climb then onto the best part of the whole descent 'Cadon Bank' one word AWESOME rolling descents with three rock drops each one getting bigger as you go with the third being around 2-2.5 foot high on an already steep descent, berms and jumps woohoo absolutley brilliant! Pity I had already run out of space on the SD card this is the descent to get some footage on! Back to the car, get changed discreetly (not that it mattered everybody else had pretty much left hours ago) back into the car Totally stoked over a fantastic days riding! back at my house 22:50 pm tired legs aching but still unable to sleep from all the experiences witnessed in the day! Pictures here and video footage here Trail review here (only Glentress at present, Inner to come) Q: Would I recommend anybody else getting up very early and driving around 8 hours worth in one day to ride two brilliant trails in scotland? A: What do you think! Get it done, stop doing the same old trails every weekend, get out there, make it a date and you won't regret it!
03/07/2008 Just got back from a four day course with work, it was down near Reading at a place called Wokefield Park. I have been several times now and always knew it was fairly near to Swinley Forest but it never really inspired me to go and ride there while I was down on courses ( I always thought it would be too much hassle trying to find somewhere for the bike ) That was untill this time! The guy who was sitting next to me for the four days (Kevin) had brought his bike down with him ( Lucky sod ) and went to Swinley forest every night! on the last night I arranged to follow him over there to find out how to get there for the next time I am on a course! Unfortunately I am not on another course untill 2009 which is a bit of a bummer! Here are a few pictures of Kevin heading off towards the trail ( I would have followed to get some action shots but the trails are a fair way away from the carpark when your on foot )
Been out for a great ride this morning with Kev Parks (three times winner of the MBR 'Best of British Killers' Competition) and his two mates Copper John and Pete, AKA Typhoo) We met up at Wildboarclough which is between Congleton and Buxton and rode up to the A54 then down to Three Shires Head and back up to the back end of Three Shires Head and back down again via the rocky/droppy route to Three Shires Head then Finally climbed out, up the grass past the farm, then left along the A54 and then down Cumberland Brook and back along to Wildboarclough! The Bad weather held off which was great and the route took us approx 2.5 hours. The only down side was that the Crag Inn pub was closed and didn't open untill 12 noon, Bummer! Anyhow pictures are in the Gallery section under Macc. I'm off now to rest my weary legs and get a shower!! 24/05/2008 Latest pictures (x3) from weekend ride at Dimmingsdale, Cheadle staffs in the new Dimmingsdale gallery more as and when I get take some! Well what a difference the dry trails are to ride compared to the usual soaking wet BUT fun soggy ones we have had for about the last 10 months or so! making the most of it now before it starts to pour down with rain again and its back to winter boots and waterproof jacket! Planning on going to 7Stanes just over the scottish border 12/13th july to try out the excellent trail centres, any advise on which trails are the best to visit would be very welcome as I don't have time to ride all of them, please leave a mail via the contacts page if you have any advise. Cheers! Also sporting a sore set of ribs after an unexpected section wasn't quite what it was the last time I rode it! ( note to ones self, walk the section 1st ) I was hanging right over the back of the seat down a very very steep (brakes fully on and still sliding at around 5-6 mph) section, and as I reached the bottom there was now a further vertical drop of around 10 inches, my front wheel hit the ground after the drop and the bike stopped dead! Which is where my ribs came into contact with the back of the seat and knocked the wind out of me! Ouch!!!! (boy was my face red!) 18/04/2008 Its true what they say, when you're content you always put on a little weight! Anyway as well as being busy adjusting life to be a Dad with his new baby 'Liam' Steve has found time to write a book about one of his passions, Buggy walking! Steve has been a keen buggy walker for many years now, and even started his own Buggy walking Club ( MABWA ) a few years back down at his local community centre in Madeley, Staffs. As well as Buggy walk guiding and tips on taking corners/berms at speed, traversing across uneven terrain, bunny hopping and front/ rear wheel manuals, Steve holds regular organized days where he will show Mums/ Dads and pretty much anybody how to maintain a buggy and even how to upgrade an existing buggy ( Disc brakes, Lock on grips, night riding lights etc ) Plus tips on safety equipment both for the buggy and walker (Helmet/ Goggles etc) for more info please contact us via the Email section of the website, Re- MABWA ( Madeley All-terrainz Buggy Walkers Association ) Here's a sneak preview of the front cover to his new book 'ALL TERRAINZ PUSHCHAIR WALKS' 'The Peak District" Available through all good book shops, published by MABWA Leisure.
10/04/2008 It is confirmed, Andy has purchased a 2008 Stumpy FSR Comp and will be taking his new steed for an excited 1st ride Sunday morning, he can't wait !! I bet he is dreaming about it right now ( below is an artists impression of what his dream bike MAY look like, he is getting older and should have a less travel not more travel so the artist think this is whats best suited )
